Montreal’s highly anticipated soccer acquisition has been officially confirmed: CF Montreal has secured the signing of Chilean football sensation Alexis Sánchez. This move, announced by CF Montreal on Tuesday, designates Sánchez as a key player, bringing a wealth of skill and experience to bolster the team’s performance. The news of Sánchez’s transfer was initially disclosed by various media outlets, including El Deportivo and The Athletic.

In a statement released by Luca Saputo, CF Montreal’s senior director of recruitment and sporting methodology, the significance of Sánchez’s arrival was highlighted. Saputo emphasized Sánchez’s exceptional technical abilities and extensive experience in top-tier global football. He praised Sánchez’s character, leadership qualities, and competitive spirit, which align with the club’s values and aspirations.

Sánchez, who is 37 years old, holds the record as the leading goal scorer for Chile’s national team, known as “La Roja,” with an impressive tally of 51 goals in international matches. This notable accomplishment further solidifies his status as a football icon.

Before the official announcement, CF Montreal teased the signing with a video hinting at a major transfer in the works. The video featured Saputo mentioning Sánchez’s preferred jersey number, indicating the imminent arrival of the star player.

The news of Sánchez’s transfer has generated excitement among fans of CF Montreal and admirers of the talented player. He will be joining compatriot Thomas Gillier, who serves as the club’s goalkeeper. In the previous season (2025-26), Sánchez played for Sevilla FC in Spain, where he scored four goals in 28 appearances.

Sánchez’s move to CF Montreal reflects a growing trend of seasoned star players making their way to Major League Soccer (MLS) towards the latter stages of their careers. This summer transfer window has witnessed other high-profile signings in MLS, such as Polish striker Robert Lewandowski with the Chicago Fire, French star Antoine Griezmann joining Orlando City, and Brazilian midfielder Casemiro linking up with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
