Since mid-July, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has reported that approximately one million chum salmon have migrated from the Bering Sea into the Yukon River. Despite this influx, researchers caution that this rise in numbers does not necessarily indicate a positive trend for this salmon species.

In the previous year, there was a significant decline in chum salmon numbers, which raised concerns among experts. Sebastian Jones, a wildlife analyst at the Yukon Conservation Society, expressed worry over the lack of understanding regarding the fluctuations in salmon populations and ecosystem dynamics.

Currently, Canadian-origin salmon constitute around 12% of the returning fish, falling below the typical range of 20-30%. While this figure remains relatively low, Jones noted an improvement compared to recent years. In 2020, only 25,000 chum salmon crossed into Canada, but this year, the expectation is for 100,000 fish to make the journey.

However, Jones emphasized that the numbers are still below the desired level, as ideally, 150,000 to 250,000 chum salmon should be entering the Yukon. Stephanie Peacock, a scientist at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, highlighted the significance of chum salmon as a key nutrient source in the fall, alongside chinook salmon, which also faces declining numbers.

Researchers are closely monitoring the Bering Sea, the starting point of the salmon migration, noting changes like rising water temperatures and increased industrial fishing activities. These factors impact the ecosystem in ways that are not fully comprehended, posing challenges for the conservation of Yukon chum salmon.

While there is a sense of cautious optimism regarding the recent salmon numbers, Peacock stressed the importance of considering the long-term decline in salmon populations and the ongoing threats faced by Yukon chum salmon. The need for continued vigilance and conservation efforts remains crucial to ensure the sustainability of these vital salmon species.
