German officials are probing a drone with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport while Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hints at escalating retaliation against countries aiding Ukraine. Lavrov stated in an interview that Moscow will employ more severe methods to dismantle support for Kyiv’s military efforts.

The drone, containing an unidentified explosive, was found in the cargo operations zone’s security area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, designated as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport for supplying weaponry, ammunition, and military gear to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo carriers.

The presence of the drone, located beside a Ukrainian cargo plane, signals a heightened level of threat for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. Investigators are treating the incident as a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario rather than an amateurish act.

Although German authorities have not disclosed the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence reports suggest it likely belongs to the Russian government. Berlin is cautiously enhancing anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature accusations.

Dobrindt highlighted ongoing hybrid warfare against Germany, encompassing espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert actions aimed at destabilizing the nation. Recent instances include a foiled Russian assassination plot against the CEO of a German defense contractor and the arrest of a suspected Russian spy scouting sabotage targets.

Russian interference in Germany extends to online disinformation campaigns targeting NATO member countries and Ukraine. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has identified Russia’s efforts to exploit internal conflicts within these nations, particularly in Germany, France, and Ukraine.

As Russia tests Germany’s tolerance levels, the drone incident in Leipzig is viewed as an aggressive escalation of interference tactics by senior experts. Lavrov’s statements are seen as a departure from Russia’s previous denial of involvement in Western countries and hint at a more aggressive stance against Europe and NATO.

The incident raises critical questions about defining the boundaries between defense measures and direct conflict. Experts stress the need to clearly communicate limits to Russia, especially as attacks evolve from cyber intrusions to physical threats, potentially endangering lives on German soil.

Overall, Lavrov’s remarks are interpreted as both an acknowledgment of Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics and a forewarning of heightened aggression against European nations and NATO.
