The recent case involving a Saint John man who was found guilty of fatally stabbing his two sons has deeply impacted many, prompting questions about the tragedy and ways to prevent such incidents.
Roman Kamyshnyy, 46, was recently sentenced to two concurrent life prison terms without parole for 25 years after being convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons.
According to domestic violence expert Peter Jaffe, while it may be difficult to comprehend a parent harming their own child, statistics show that around 30 children in Canada fall victim to such violence each year. Jaffe highlighted that approximately half of these cases, known as filicides, occur in the context of intimate partner violence, where the perpetrator seeks revenge by harming the children after a partner leaves an abusive relationship.
A study released earlier this year revealed that New Brunswick had the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada between 2012 and 2022, with the majority of victims being intimate partners of the accused. The study also emphasized the heightened risk during the period of separation and the misuse of children as a means of inflicting further harm on the other parent.
In the case of Kamyshnyy, the prosecution argued that the murders were driven by vengeance, with him allegedly using his sons’ lives as a weapon to retaliate against his ex-wife. The tragic incident unfolded when the boys were found stabbed to death in the family’s apartment, where Kamyshnyy resided. He also attempted suicide but survived, leaving a note taking responsibility for the situation.
Experts stress the importance of recognizing warning signs of domestic violence and filicides, emphasizing the need for public awareness, education, and early intervention to prevent such tragedies. They suggest that identifying risk factors, supporting victims, and enhancing training for frontline professionals could help mitigate the prevalence of domestic homicides in the future.
