The prosecutor general of the United Arab Emirates has ordered a probe into the incident on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which was diverted to Saudi Arabia after an altercation in the cockpit. The authorities are investigating the circumstances, motives, and potential terrorist links of the incident.

Due to the aircraft being registered in the U.A.E. and operating under its flag, Emirati judicial authorities have jurisdiction over the case, applying U.A.E. laws to crimes committed on board, regardless of the location.

There are questions surrounding the co-pilot’s intentions and background after allegedly attacking the captain in what Israel officials believe was an attempted crash. Concerns also arise about how a weapon, likely a knife, was brought on board without detection.

Disaster was narrowly averted when the wounded captain unlocked the cockpit door, enabling passengers to subdue the attacker and allow a reserve crew to safely land the plane in Saudi Arabia. The attacker, identified as an Omani national, is under investigation in Saudi Arabia with potential transfer to the U.A.E.

Passengers intervened to regain control of the situation after the co-pilot’s actions caused the plane to rapidly descend. The heroic actions of the captain, Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, have been praised by Israeli and Indian leaders. Machchhar is reported to be in good health and recovering, with ongoing support from the Indian Embassy for his medical care.

Israel has commended the passengers who helped overpower the attacker, emphasizing the importance of their swift actions in preventing a potential disaster. The incident has raised security concerns in Israel ahead of upcoming elections, given the recent history of security threats in the region.
