Google has announced that it will stop supporting its Chrome browser on older versions of Apple’s macOS system. While Chrome will still function on MacBooks and iMacs, it will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving users vulnerable to security risks.
The change will impact Mac users running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier versions. Those on these platforms will need to upgrade to macOS Ventura or a newer operating system to continue receiving Chrome support. However, some older Mac models, such as iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, necessitating a new device purchase for safe Chrome usage.
The transition is set to take effect in July of this year. Google specified that Chrome version 150 is the final release supporting macOS 12, with Chrome 151, scheduled for July 28, 2026, requiring macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users on older macOS versions will still be able to use Chrome, but they will not receive any further updates. Google advises users on macOS 12 to upgrade to macOS 13 or above to ensure continued access to security updates and new Chrome features.
