Following the withdrawal of Nira Dookeran from Ottawa, there is now only one candidate vying for the leadership position of the Green Party of Canada.
Mike Morrice, a former MP from Kitchener, Ont., is now the sole contender.
In a statement released on the party’s website, Dookeran mentioned personal and family reasons as the basis for her decision to exit the race after careful consideration.
Expressing her support for Morrice, Dookeran acknowledged the wealth of talent and dedication within the Green Party across the nation.
The Green Party of Canada extended gratitude to Dookeran for her candidacy and the effort she put into the leadership competition.
In response, Morrice, in a statement on Tuesday evening, expressed appreciation towards Dookeran and emphasized the continuation of their campaign to advance the party’s growth and address pressing environmental challenges.
The Green Party of Canada formally initiated a five-month leadership contest on June 11.
Having announced her intention to step down in the summer of 2025, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May plans to remain in her position until November.
Elizabeth May, the sole Green MP in the House of Commons, assumed leadership of the Green Party in 2006. After her resignation in 2019, Annamie Paul was elected as her successor in 2020. May returned as co-leader in 2022 alongside Jonathan Pedneault.
