Major beauty retailer to open 25 new stores in huge high street boost

Published:

Superdrug has announced plans to open 25 new UK stores in 2025 in a move that will create approximately 600 new jobs. The first new location opened in Leeds Briggate in late February.

Superdrug plans to open other stores in prime locations throughout the year, including Guernsey and Cribbs Causeway in Bristol. The retailer will also refurbish 65 stores this year while also expanding multiple sites, including in Luton and Dundee. Additionally, a major extension is planned for its shop in Meadowhall Sheffield.

These extensions will increase overall store footprint between 50% and 100% The health and beauty retailer said all its new sites will include beauty stations where customers can get treatments in-store, such as ear piercing, manicures, and eye-brow threading, plus others.

Shoppers will also be able to get tailored advice from trained consultants at luxury fragrance counters, as well as nurse clinics and pharmacies for medical advice. The update from Superdrug comes after the retailer saw sales increase by 25% last year, and footfall up by 8% in January this year, in its top 100 largest stores last year.

Superdrug will continue to invest in large-scale stores, with particular focus on destination stores and retail parks. The retailer made similar plans to open 25 new stores this time last year, including in Wheatley Centre Shopping Parkin Doncaster, St David’s Centre in Cardiff, Bluewater Shopping Centre and Westfield Stratford City.

Nigel Duxbury, Superdrug Property Director, said: “We want everyone who enters Superdrug to feel an elevated customer experience. For us, this is not about a quick and easy purchase, it is about engaging customers with added extras that truly enrich their everyday lives.

“Be that through updated cosmetic stands which can be found in our Brent Cross store, or via great beauty treatments that everyone can afford regularly, or through private clinics that give face to face access to healthcare professionals.

“We can see from our sales last year that investing in and increasing the number of large format stores in our estate allows us to accelerate our bricks and mortar strategy, so that we can bring the bigger and better shopping experience, that we know our customers love, to even more communities across the UK.”

It comes after Superdrug celebrated its “best Christmas ever” as like-for0like sales rose by 5.1% in the final weeks of 2024 compared to the previous year. One gift set was sold every second throughout December as four new own brand ranges were added. The retailer saw significant growth in online – with sales up by 21% year-on-year.

Retail Parks were the best performing offline stores in terms of growth, with shoppers relishing the more engaging and expansive retail experience that these bigger stores provide. Superdrug has over 830 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland, including 200 in-store pharmacies.

Peter Macnab, Superdrug CEO, said: “We’re proud of these results and want to thank our customers for their continued loyalty to Superdrug as we continue our mission to be as accessible as possible when it comes to high-quality beauty and health. I’d also like to thank our colleagues for their efforts to make Superdrug the best place to shop this Christmas.”

He added: “2025 will be an exciting year for us as we continue to enhance our in-store experience and invest in our Only At Superdrug product innovations and exclusives, to give customers reasons to keep returning to Superdrug.”
