Sunderland coach Carlton Fairweather dies, 63, as clubs pay tribute to ex-player

Sunderland coach Carlton Fairweather has died at the age of 63 after a short illness. Fairweather was a member of Wimbledon’s famous Crazy Gang during his playing days, as well as enjoying spells with Carlisle United and New York Fever.

A broken leg unfortunately ruled him out of the Dons’ historic FA Cup win in 1988, when they beat much-fancied Liverpool in the final. After retirement, Fairweather returned to Wimbledon as an academy coach.

He took charge of their Under 17 and Under 18 teams, before being promoted to Reserves manager. He would leave the London side to join Crystal Palace before settling in the North East and taking up a community coach position with Sunderland.

The former winger was appointed manager of Sunderland Ladies in December 2014, following their promotions to the WSL 1. He spent more than two years in that post before leaving in early 2017.

Fairweather has since become a respected member of the Black Cats’ academy set-up. Sadly, he has now passed away, with the Championship side expressing their sadness after confirming the news on Tuesday.

“Sunderland AFC is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carlton Fairweather, aged 63. A beloved character behind the scenes at the Academy of Light, Carlton passed away on Monday evening surrounded by his family and loved ones,” a club statement read.

“The Club has lost an exceptionally talented coach and an even greater friend, who impacted and inspired so many with his vibrant spirit and infectious smile. From players and staff to supporters, Carlton will forever be remembered on Wearside by all fortunate enough to cross his path.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Sunderland AFC are with Carlton’s wife, Lesley, his children Jordan, Elliott and Tyla, and everybody who knew and loved him.”

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: “Carlton’s personality and charisma was unique. He worked across all aspects of our Club and the reason he’s so highly thought of is down to his dedication, humility, and work ethic.

“Within a sporting environment, you need consistency, and Carlton’s character very rarely shifted from enthusiastic, bubbly, and infectious. Add this to someone who crafted their skill of coaching and mentoring over so many years and it’s a special mix.

“I was blessed to spend time with Carlton on many occasions and he always brought the gift of wisdom, a gift only very few people can give. He will be truly missed by all within our Club.”

Wimbledon added their own message of remembrance following the news of Fairweather’s death. A statement read: “Everyone at AFC Wimbledon was deeply saddened to learn that popular former Dons winger Carlton Fairweather has passed away.

“To this day Carlton is fondly remembered by the Wimbledon faithful and will be sorely missed by all those who knew him well. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Carlton.”
