Disney+ confirms release date for ‘nightmarish’ child abduction drama that will leave viewers shaken

Published:

Disney+ has shared the first look at a riveting new thriller series from the producers of some of the most successful shows on Netflix. It will be released on Wednesday, 16th April.

This five-part psychological drama is packed with A-list names fans will recognise from many of the biggest TV hits from the past few years.

Moreover, it comes from the mind of bestselling author Alex Dahl, based on her novel Playdate, and is produced by the studio behind several Harlan Coben mysteries, so enthralling drama and jaw-dropping twists are guaranteed.

One Day and This Is Going to Hurt breakout Ambika Mod and Strike’s Holliday Grainger lead the all star cast.

Plus, Andor’s Denise Gough, Cloud Atlas’s Jim Sturgess, The Suspect’s Bronaugh Waugh and My Lady Jane’s Michael Workeye take supporting roles.

Disney+ teases: “The series tells the story of fascinating, relatable and complex women in an unimaginable situation.”

A full synopsis reveals a harrowing tale of an abducted young girl that is set to keep viewers on the very edge of their seats throughout each episode.

Missing people are falling through the gaps, experiencing serious harm while they are away, with little or no support to help address the reasons why they left. They need help, so they don’t go missing again.

A dedicated strategy led by the Home Office, Department for Education, and Department for Health and Social Care would provide the proper attention and resources.

Without this, thousands will continue to go missing without support. and, when they return, there will be no meaningful opportunity to speak to anyone about why they left, or what happened while they were away. This leaves vulnerable people, who are often in crisis, with no support.

Life is never hopeless. Everyone should know that someone cares, and that help is available from organisations such as the charity Missing People.

The Mirror is calling for:

• The publication of a new missing children and adults strategy to ensure police, health and social care play their part

• Investment in prevention for those at most risk of going missing

• Support to be offered to every missing child and adult on their return

“A seemingly ordinary decision turns the world of Elisa, mum to two young kids, upside down in this tense thriller,” it reads.

“When her 9-year-old daughter Lucia excitedly asks to go on an overnight playdate with her new best friend Josie, Elisa agrees. After meeting Josie’s mother, Rebecca, she’s put at ease by her charming nature and their impressive house.

“But when she says goodnight to her daughter, she has no idea that she is about to be thrust into every parent’s worst nightmare.

“The next day, when Elisa goes to pick up Lucia, she discovers that the beautiful house was a holiday rental. Lucia is missing. Rebecca and Josie have vanished. What started out as her daughter’s first sleepover has turned into an abduction.

“As an urgent manhunt unfolds across Europe, Elisa and her husband Fred find themselves the object of police and public scrutiny. Elisa’s perfect family begins to unravel under the pressure, and long-buried secrets come to light. Rebecca took Lucia for a reason.

Disney+ members get the equivalent of two months free if they sign up to the annual Standard or Premium plan, which offer 12 months for the price of 10.

This allows you to lock in the current rate for a year and avoid any surprise price hikes.

“And as viewers learn more about the tangled lives of these women we will wonder if Rebecca was justified in kidnapping the little girl – and whether she might be better off staying hidden.”

New images released this week have revealed the first look at Grainger, Sturgess, Gough and Mod’s characters.

An exact release date has yet to be confirmed, but the series is slated to premiere later in 2025, so expect more details and a trailer to follow in the next few months.

Nicola Shindler is executive producing for Quay Street Productions, having worked on the likes of Coben thrillers Missing You and Fool Me Once for Netflix as well as the Russell T Davies-helmed drams Nolly and It’s A Sin.

The Stolen Girl will premiere Wednesday, 16th April on Disney+.
