DI Roberts (Isobel Middleton) was first seen on ITV soap Emmerdale in February this year after investigating Anthony Fox’s disappearance. Although it was her first time in the Dales, it’s not her first time in the world of soap, as the actress if actually married to a Coronation Street star.
During her first appearance in the soap, fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter to beg the show to cast her as a permanent character. Fans got their wishes last night when DI Roberts returned once again, this time to inform Caleb and Ruby of a break-in at the depot.
As well as being privy to the world of soap through her partner, Isobel has also appeared on Emmerdale previously, starring as Dr Lane in 2014, again as a prosecution barrister in 2018 and most recently a woman called Jean in 2020.
In between her roles at Emmerdale, Isobel tied the knot to Coronation Street Jane Hazlegrove, who plays the role of Bernie Winter. The pair have been together for three decades and tied the knot in 2015.
Jane joined Coronation Street in 2015 as the mum of Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), who left the soap late last year after his character died from Motor Neurone Disease.
Other major storylines include the surprise arrival of her long-lost son Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) and her romance with Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin).
As well as Emmerdale, Isobel has also starred in BBC’s EastEnders, playing the role of Sadie Banks in 2002 and even had a part in 2009’s Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
Jane previously revealed that Isobel had helped her through her challenging scenes during Peter Ash’s emotional exit last year. Speaking on receiving her script for the emotional final scenes, Jane told the Mirror and other press: “My Mrs took me off to a shepherd’s hut in Northumbria and we sat in the sunshine with a bottle of wine and read it together because I just thought it’s going to be too much for me to have in the house, as it were.
“I do cry a lot anyway, I’m an emotional woman, so it’s usually in the car on the way home..”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
