Danny Dyer has laid his his heart out in a candid tell-all interview, as he admitted to cheating and drug-fuelled benders. The former EastEnders star was moved to tears as he revealed the drastic measures his wife Joanne made to get him back on the straight and narrow.
In a warts-and-all confessional, Danny revealed how therapy helped him after every male role model in his life either left him or died. He bravely took part in new ITV series The Assembly, where he was faced with questions by a group of interviewers who are autistic, neurodivergent or learning disabled.
The deal is that there is nothing off the table, and all answers must be honest. Danny did just that as he called the time when his wife Joanne emptied his bank account and kicked him out.
In 2000, the pair had a shared bank account but Jo cleared it out completely due to Danny’s wild behaviour. He revealed: “She controls everything now.”
Explaining what happened, he said: “Yes, she did kick me out because I was a pr***. And she deserved better. Sometimes I would go out and get off my head, take drugs, and I wouldn’t come home for three days. I had issues – I never wanted the party to end. She had every right to throw me out.”
Danny and Joanne’s romance started when they met at school when they were 14-years-old. Before Danny made it big in the acting world, Jo was the main breadwinner as she worked as a financial adviser.
Despite their challenges, Joanne asked Danny to marry her on Valentine’s Day in 2015 and they tied the knot the following year. They have three children, the eldest being Love Island’s Dani Dyer, daughter called Sunnie and a son called Arty.
Her proposal came after Danny admitted he cheated on her in the past. Discussing what happened, Joanne said it was hard but she wouldn’t want to “destroy the lives” of her children over it.
Joanne added to Hello! magazine: “It’s been hard but I’ve got over it. When you have children, it isn’t just about me and Danny. I wouldn’t destroy the lives of my babies for something that doesn’t matter.”
Danny confessed: “I thought the grass was greener – but the grass was horrible and I don’t ever want to go there again.”
Opening up on the How To Fail podcast, Danny spoke of how important his wife has been in helping keep him “grounded”.
He explained: “It f****d my head up when I became really famous. I didn’t quite know what to do with it and I suppose she stood by me for a lot of s**t and had to be very patient with me.
“And of course I do believe in the marriage vows and sickness and health and for better for worse. So it’s hard to stay in a relationship for that long with the press attention and with me being a p***k for many years, because I was, I hold my hands up, I lost the plot for many years.
“I didn’t quite know who I was and I suppose she had to suffer all that on a national level. I love her with all my heart. You know, she challenges me every day. She’s kept me very grounded. I’ll tell you that now.”
