Why did Charlotte Ritchie leave Call the Midwife? Everything Netflix’s You star has appeared in

Published:

You season 5 drops on Netflix today, with Penn Badgley taking his final turn as Joe Goldberg opposite British actress Charlotte Ritchie, who portrays Kate Galvin.

The final installment of the chilling Netflix stalker series, which has helped launch Gossip Girl favourite Badgley into even further fame, promises to be the most explosive yet.

Netflix teases: “In the epic fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg returns to New York to enjoy his happily ever after… until his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires.”

As the Netflix show comes to an end, fans have been wondering where they recognise Ritchie from, as the star has already built up an extremely impressive acting résumé.

Without further ado, let’s take a look back at the star’s career to date, from BBC’s Call the Midwife to Hollywood.

Sky is giving away a free Netflix subscription with its new Sky Stream TV bundles, including the £15 Essential TV plan.

This lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like You and Black Mirror.

Charlotte Richie was already a successful star on British television before joining US series You when the Netflix show travelled to the UK to film season 4.

One of her earliest roles was as a Slytherin student in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005, which will come as a surprise to many fans.

In 2004, she also played a lead role in a short film entitled The Open Doors with Good Omens actor Michael Sheen.

She went on to land small appearances in shows like Doctors, Life of Riley and ITV’s Emmerdale before her break-out role in Channel 4’s Fresh Meat, in which she played Manchester University student Oregon between 2011 and 2016.

Since then she has appeared as Nurse Barbara Gilbert in BBC period drama Call the Midwife, Alison Cooper in BBC sitcom Ghosts, and Bonnie Davenport in ITV’s Grantchester.

*Warning – Spoilers for Call the Midwife season 7.*

Charlotte Richie starred as Nurse Barbara Gilbert in BBC’s Call the Midwife between season 4 in 2015 and season 7 in 2018.

Her departure shocked viewers, as she quickly became a fan favourite on the show, and many were left in tears.

In season 7, Richie’s character was written off the show after contracting sepsis and dying in tragic scenes.

Explaining her reason for moving on from the show, the actress expressed her desire to try out new acting opportunities.

“They ask you to commit quite early on in the year to the show,” she told Radiotimes . “And I always wanted to do it, but I also felt that I’d done three different series for the last five years, and thought it might be good to slightly try and branch out and try something new.”

Since appearing as Joe Goldberg’s most recent love interest Kate Galvin on Netflix series You, Charlotte Ritchie has appeared as Barbara in 2023 Hollywood film Wonka, which starred Timothée Chalamet in the titular role.

She has also appeared in the 2024 dystopian sci-fi The Assessment alongside Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Olsen, as well as the TV movie Partygate, which is a dramatisation of 10 Downing Street’s infamous Partygate scandal during the Covid pandemic.

She is also set to star opposite Strictly winner Rose Ayling-Ellis in upcoming ITV drama Code of Silence and in Netflix crime drama Legends alongside Strike’s Tom Burke.

You season 5 is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
