Residents living near Lake Erie are well-acquainted with cautions about blue-green algae blooms. These advisories include avoiding swimming in affected areas, keeping pets away, and refraining from ingesting the water due to potential health hazards like rashes, sore throats, and red eyes. However, a new concern has emerged regarding airborne exposure to algae particles.

Researchers are investigating the health implications of inhaling airborne algae toxins. The Great Lakes Center for Freshwater and Human Health, led by University of Toledo’s Professor of Medicine, David Kennedy, is spearheading this American-led study. Over the past couple of years, they have been examining how these airborne toxins affect human health, with an anticipated five-year analysis period.

The ongoing Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR) is tracking individuals who live, work, or engage in recreational activities around Lake Erie’s western basin. The focus is on understanding the impact of airborne toxins on both healthy individuals and those potentially more vulnerable to such toxins.

Approximately 200 participants are currently involved in the study, representing about 75% of the target number. The research aims to identify individuals more susceptible to these toxins and the potential long-term health implications. Participants are providing various samples and data to aid in this investigation.

Experts emphasize the importance of studying the movement of algae toxins in the air, which can travel significant distances and persist for extended periods. The study also delves into the similarities between airborne algae exposure symptoms and conditions like asthma. While long-term health data concerning airborne algae exposure is limited, experts highlight the increased sensitivity of lungs to inhaled toxins compared to ingested ones.

The study seeks to offer communities a better understanding of the risks associated with airborne algae exposure. By shedding light on potential hazards, researchers hope to provide practical advice to mitigate health risks, such as using air filters during certain conditions.
