Members of Jeremy Corbyn’s latest leftist initiative have officially chosen to adopt “Your Party” as the permanent name during a recent gathering in Liverpool. Amid internal discord, delegates at the debut conference voted on the party’s official title, which had been temporarily referred to as “Your Party” since the summer, along with other alternatives like “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many.”
The announcement of “Your Party” as the chosen name was made by Mr. Corbyn, who emphasized the decision’s significance. The new movement’s members also voted for a committee of “ordinary members” to steer the party instead of the traditional model led by MPs.
The collective leadership model garnered 51.6% of the votes, surpassing the 48.4% in favor of a single leadership structure. Consequently, neither Mr. Corbyn nor former Labour MP Zarah Sultana are eligible to contest for the leadership position.
Ms. Sultana, who abstained from the conference’s initial day due to disputes over expulsions, expressed enthusiasm for the outcome, highlighting her advocacy for enhanced member democracy from the onset. She articulated her excitement for the party’s direction towards a new socialist entity driven by mass support and collective decision-making.
A spokesperson for Your Party emphasized the significance of the vote, portraying it as a reflection of a novel political approach that prioritizes grassroots involvement over top-down leadership. The party aims to differentiate itself from the conventional political landscape by offering a democratic, accountable structure centered on member participation.
