Anthony Joshua’s driver is facing charges of reckless and dangerous driving following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was behind the wheel of a black Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua, Latif Ayodele, and Sina Ghami when it collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. After being treated at a Lagos hospital, Kayode was transferred to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state.
Following questioning and providing an official statement about the events leading up to the crash, which claimed the lives of Ghami and Ayodele, Kayode was apprehended by the police for fleeing the scene.
In an update, the Police Public Relations Officer disclosed that Kayode has been charged and granted bail pending further legal proceedings. The charges include causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s license.
The case has been adjourned until January 20 as investigations continue. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, has been discharged from the hospital and paid his respects to the deceased at a funeral home.
Preliminary findings suggest that the crash was caused by a tire blowout due to speeding. The wrecked vehicle has been located, and it was revealed that the parked truck was illegally positioned before the tragic incident.
Tributes poured in for the deceased, with heartfelt messages from boxing figures and mourners outside Ghami’s gym expressing sorrow over the loss. The fatal crash occurred shortly after Joshua’s recent fight, with plans for a future bout with Tyson Fury potentially impacted by the tragic event.
Despite the setback, the boxing community continues to mourn the loss of Ghami and Ayodele, emphasizing the impact on Joshua and the uncertainties surrounding his boxing career moving forward.
