Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton advocates for Africa’s autonomy from former colonial powers like Britain, France, Spain, and others to regain control of its natural wealth. Hamilton, a seasoned driver, also expresses his desire for the sport to return to the African continent before he concludes his career.

During a press briefing preceding the Australian Grand Prix as the 2026 season kicks off in Melbourne, Hamilton was questioned by a South African journalist about the possibility of hosting a race in Africa. The seven-time world champion seized this opportunity to voice his aspiration for such an event while highlighting his concerns about the ongoing exploitation of the continent.

In his statement, Hamilton emphasized the beauty of Africa and lamented the global dominance over its resources without adequate acknowledgment. He urged for unity among African leaders to reclaim their territory from external powers, emphasizing the continent’s potential for greatness and independence.

Expressing his passion for seeing Formula 1 races return to Africa, Hamilton noted that no Grand Prix has been held on the continent since 1993. He highlighted his experiences in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa, suggesting them as potential locations for future races.

Hamilton is actively advocating for Africa’s inclusion on the Formula 1 calendar before his retirement, engaging with the sport’s decision-makers to make this vision a reality. He emphasized his personal connection to the continent, citing his heritage from countries like Togo and Benin, expressing pride in his African roots.

Furthermore, Sky has enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports package, now offering HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+, and Hayu in addition to 135 channels and comprehensive coverage of Formula 1. Sky’s coverage includes all practice sessions, qualifiers, and races throughout the season, as well as exclusive access to other sports events like the Premier League, EFL, darts, and golf.
