Loblaw, a prominent grocery chain, saw an increase in profits during the second quarter as it continued to attract cost-conscious shoppers to its discount stores No Frills and Maxi. The company reported its financial results for the quarter ending June 20, revealing a revenue of over $15.3 billion, marking a four percent rise from the previous quarter. Profit available to common shareholders also rose by approximately five percent to $751 million.

In terms of sales growth, Loblaw experienced a 1.6 percent increase in same-store sales for its retail food business, while its pharmacy unit, which includes Shoppers Drug Mart, reported a 4.6 percent gain in same-store sales. This growth was primarily driven by a 7.5 percent increase in pharmacy and health-care services, attributed to the surge in sales of generic GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

During a conference call with analysts, Loblaw’s chief financial officer, Richard Dufresne, highlighted the positive impact of the generic GLP-1 drugs on the company’s pharmacy performance. He mentioned that the lower pricing of generic drugs was being offset by higher volumes, leading to expectations of increased revenue, gross profit dollars, and gross margin rate.

The company’s executives noted a significant uptick in sales of GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozemic and Wegovy, with a reported 40 percent increase year-to-date. Additionally, Loblaw’s CEO mentioned that customers, faced with food price inflation, are increasingly opting for frozen vegetables over fresh produce to manage costs effectively.

Despite the challenging market conditions, Loblaw remains optimistic about its performance, with its No Frills and Maxi stores continuing to attract value-seeking customers. The company’s shares traded steadily on Thursday, maintaining a six percent year-to-date increase.

Overall, Loblaw’s strategic focus on offering value-driven options to consumers, coupled with the rise in pharmacy sales due to generic drug offerings, has contributed to its steady financial performance in the second quarter.
