A man aged 32 passed away in the United States due to an accident on a rollercoaster, leading to the closure of the investigation. Kevin Zavala, who had a prior spinal injury and utilized a wheelchair, experienced a sudden loss of consciousness while riding the Stardust Racers attraction at the Universal Epic Universe theme park in Florida in September.

The dual-launch coaster opened officially in May at Universal Resort Orlando, reaching speeds of up to 62 mph (100 kph). According to a report from the Associated Press news agency released on December 12, a medical examiner’s findings revealed significant injuries to Zavala’s head and body, concluding that his death resulted from blunt-impact injuries.

Witnesses and security footage indicated that Zavala was in good condition at the ride’s onset but was found unresponsive and injured at the end. His girlfriend reported that the lap restraint on the ride was not properly secured and positioned, leading to Zavala’s head hitting a metal bar during the ride.

Despite efforts to secure Zavala in his seat upon return, ride operators faced difficulties, taking 10 minutes to release him. Warning signs at the ride entrance cautioned against certain conditions for riders, including recent surgeries or physical ailments that could be worsened by the ride.

Zavala’s family clarified that his pre-existing spinal condition did not directly contribute to his death, citing previous surgeries and injuries. The family’s attorney, Ben Crump, did not respond to inquiries regarding the sheriff’s office report.

Throughout the investigation, it was determined that ride workers followed safety protocols diligently and were not negligent.
