In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in northern Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing as a method to monitor fish populations within the Margaree River. This technique involves using an electric current to momentarily stun fish, allowing crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before releasing them back into the river.

Michael Fabiano, the conservation co-ordinator for the association, mentioned that electrofishing operations typically run from May to late September. The process results in a two percent mortality rate among the thousands of fish processed each season. Fabiano emphasized the priority placed on fish safety, ensuring that electrofishing is avoided when water temperatures are too high.

The crew carefully regulates the electric current levels to ensure the fish are momentarily stunned, emphasizing the safety measures in place such as heavy rubber gloves and chest waders to prevent any accidents while working with electricity in water. Over the 120-kilometre river stretch, crews survey various locations to determine the most productive streams and assess the overall health of the fish population, mainly consisting of trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional sightings of eels and lampreys.

This season, the association has caught and released around 1,800 fish across nine streams, a decrease from the previous year. Fabiano attributed this decline partially to the challenging conditions experienced the year before, with low water levels and high temperatures due to a severe drought.

Paul MacNeil, the association’s president, highlighted the increased focus on scientific research due to reduced data collection efforts by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the Margaree Salmon Association aimed to ensure reliable data to monitor river health amidst changing climate conditions. To address the data gap, the association collaborated with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association to acquire electrofishing equipment, enabling more precise data collection on juvenile fish populations.

MacNeil stressed the importance of electrofishing in capturing juvenile fish accurately within specific territories along the river, complementing the manual fish counting efforts undertaken by members. This method provides valuable insights into the health and sustainability of the river’s fish population.
