The Montreal police service has initiated a comprehensive response plan to revamp its institutional culture in light of allegations of racial profiling by a group of officers in the city’s north end. The plan aims to rebuild community trust and combat discrimination through a combination of immediate disciplinary measures and long-term oversight, emphasizing transparent communication and shared accountability with local residents.
This initiative was unveiled during a public meeting at city hall, where Chief Fady Dagher addressed the scandal and called for change in response to the allegations of racial profiling by officers in the Montréal-Nord borough. Dagher disclosed that 16 officers at Station 39 were under investigation for alleged racist and hateful behavior towards Black and Arab individuals during police stops, leading to the disbandment of the 16-member patrol unit. The investigation was triggered by reports from the officers’ colleagues.
Chief Dagher confirmed that three officers have been suspended, with the investigation ongoing, and highlighted the importance of internal and external whistleblowing in uncovering misconduct. The police service has committed to collaborating with neighborhood stakeholders and community organizations in formulating future policy changes.
During the meeting, Dagher acknowledged the challenges of effecting change within the police service, emphasizing the ongoing work required. Residents raised concerns about racism and policing practices, pushing for greater transparency and accountability in the investigation. The dismantled unit at Station 39 has been replaced with a new team, as part of efforts to address the community’s concerns.
The allegations have reignited worries about racism and racial profiling in Montréal-Nord, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and systemic change. Community members expressed frustration over the persistent issues of racial profiling and demanded concrete actions to address the problem. Chief Dagher reassured the public of ongoing efforts to combat racial profiling and discrimination, underscoring the gradual progress being made in the right direction.
