A mother from North Yorkshire has successfully saved £1,370 by sticking to a cash-only approach in her daily spending habits. Nicola Richardson, a teacher and mother of two, has been following this strategy for over ten years, only making an exception during the Covid pandemic when contactless payments became more prevalent.

Richardson operates on a weekly budget of £130, covering essentials like groceries, fuel, household items, and expenses for her children and pet. She believes that using cash helps her stay disciplined and avoid impulsive purchases compared to using a card, which she finds too convenient and conducive to overspending.

By limiting herself to physical cash, Richardson feels a stronger connection to her money, making her more mindful of her spending. She highlighted the importance of having a tangible limit, like having only £50 in her purse, which acts as a natural barrier to unnecessary purchases.

In addition to her cash-only rule, Richardson undertakes various money-saving challenges such as “no buy” days, tenner Tuesday, and fiver Friday, where she sets aside specific amounts regularly. Last year, she participated in the penny challenge, saving incrementally each day, resulting in a total savings of £667.95. These efforts culminated in a total savings of £1,370, which she earmarked for household expenses.

Apart from her frugal habits, Richardson shares her money-saving tips on her YouTube channel, NicolaatTheFrugalCottage. She advocates for tracking expenses diligently, setting financial goals, avoiding unnecessary purchases, and engaging in popular saving challenges to bolster savings.

Richardson emphasizes the value of mindful spending, prioritizing experiences over material possessions. She encourages people to be transparent about their financial decisions and focus on what truly matters in life. Ultimately, she believes that using money purposefully leads to a more fulfilling life.
