The Newfoundland and Labrador government is seeking input from the public regarding new road safety regulations due to the increasing popularity of e-scooters and e-bikes. Government Services Minister Mike Goosney emphasized the importance of updating legislation to align with technological advancements to prevent potential incidents. Concerns raised by parents in Labrador west about the safety of these modes of transportation have further underscored the need for regulation.

Jackie Granter and Kesha Morgan, parents in Labrador west, expressed witnessing more motorized vehicles on the road without proper adherence to safety practices such as wearing helmets. They highlighted instances of risky behavior by riders and the lack of safety instructions prior to operating e-scooters. Both parents voiced their support for the provincial government’s efforts to amend the Highway Traffic Act to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters promptly.

An online survey is available on engagenl.ca for individuals to provide feedback on potential safety requirements including age restrictions, helmet usage, education, and operational rules for these vehicles. The survey also addresses concerns about minimum age requirements, designated operating areas, and speed limits. The province is accepting written submissions via email or mail to gather diverse perspectives before proposing regulatory changes in the upcoming legislative session.

A recent survey conducted by the Canadian Pediatric Society revealed alarming statistics related to e-scooter accidents, emphasizing the need for caution when using these vehicles. Organizations like Parachute Canada and medical experts advocate for stringent safety measures, advising against children under 16 operating e-scooters due to the associated risks. Pamela Fuselli from Parachute Canada emphasized the importance of collective efforts from manufacturers, legislators, and enforcement agencies to enhance safety standards and prevent injuries.

Julia Kent from the Canadian Automobile Association Atlantic highlighted the regulatory gaps surrounding micro-mobility vehicles, stressing the urgency for updated regulations to mitigate the escalating risks associated with these vehicles. Kent emphasized the need for regulations on helmets, speed limits, and operational areas to ensure safer usage. Despite the challenges in keeping pace with the rapid adoption of e-scooters and e-bikes, Kent remains optimistic about implementing effective regulatory measures to safeguard public safety.

Overall, stakeholders are urged to participate in the public consultation process and provide valuable insights to shape the upcoming regulatory framework for e-scooters and e-bikes in Newfoundland and Labrador.
