The NFL has strongly supported the Philadelphia Eagles’ management of quarterback Jalen Hurts’ blood clot situation, while the players’ union has called for an investigation into the matter. The Eagles have not faced any disciplinary action in connection with their handling of Hurts, according to a source familiar with the situation. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer, defended the Eagles’ approach to treating Hurts, emphasizing that it was cautious, patient-centered, and diligently monitored at every stage.

The NFL Players Association stated that they were informed by the league that there were no plans for a review. The union emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts and ensure that players receive the best care in the future. Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from a blood clot that moved from his calf to his lungs.

NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller refuted reports claiming that Hurts had gone without sleep for an extended period before playing. Miller clarified that Hurts had rested for several hours before the game and stressed that the league had a comprehensive understanding of the events surrounding the situation.

Dr. Caron Rockman, a veteran vascular surgeon, expressed that based on available information, the Eagles handled the situation appropriately given the complex nature of the issue. Hurts will continue treatment with blood thinners and will be sidelined from football activities until he is off them. The medical staff in London diagnosed Hurts with a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf before his game against Jacksonville.

Dr. Sills underscored that decisions regarding Hurts’ health were prioritized over football considerations and reiterated the medical team’s commitment to player safety. He emphasized that all medical decisions were made with caution and rejected any suggestion that player health was compromised.
