I extend warm New Year wishes to all Mirror readers. Regardless of how you celebrate, I hope it brings you joy!

Reflecting on 2025, it was a year filled with accomplishments. The Lionesses’ remarkable Euros victory, the Red Roses’ triumph in the women’s Rugby World Cup, and Scotland’s remarkable World Cup qualification were highlights. However, for many, it was a challenging year. I understand the dedication of Mirror readers and recognize the desire for simple pleasures like dining out, going on holiday, or owning a new phone.

I want to convey a straightforward message for 2026: this will be the year where promised changes will materialize. Expect improvements in bills, communities, and public services. More police presence, closure of asylum hotels, and the opening of new health centers in neighborhoods are on the horizon. Community investments in parks, piers, and youth clubs will enhance local pride. Additionally, new workplace rights and housing benefits for renters will be implemented, significantly reducing child poverty.

Recently, a nine-year-old Scottish girl handed me a note detailing the impact of poverty on children. She described hunger, cold rooms, worn-out uniforms, and fatigue caused by poverty. It was eye-opening to witness such insight from a child, especially knowing that the majority of impoverished British children come from hardworking families struggling to make ends meet.

To combat this, we plan to lift over half a million children out of poverty by eliminating the two-child limit on child benefits, expanding free school meals, and addressing the rising cost of living. Our focus on stabilizing the country’s finances enables us to provide support in various areas, offering relief to households.

Through initiatives like freezing rail fares, reducing energy bills, and increasing the national minimum wage, we aim to alleviate financial burdens on families. Our gradual progress in revitalizing the nation demonstrates that positive change is possible, restoring hope and pride in the process. As we move forward, we envision a brighter future for families across the country.

“Hope” seems to have faded from political discourse, but in 2026, we aim to rekindle it. This year will showcase the true essence of Britain, instilling confidence and optimism in all of us.

– Prime Minister
