A grandmother, Belinda Strickland, aged 65, faced a life-threatening situation when she was assaulted by a pregnant woman she did not know at a funeral gathering. The incident occurred at the Conservative Club in Splott, Cardiff, while Belinda was attending the funeral of a close friend’s partner, Terry.

During the funeral wake, Danielle Oliver, a pregnant mother of three, suddenly attacked Belinda, causing her severe injuries such as fractured ribs, breathing difficulties, and a diagnosis of emphysema. Belinda, who is a grandmother of 14, expressed her fear of death during the assault by the stranger, Oliver, whose actions left Belinda hospitalized for over a week to recover from the physical trauma.

Belinda recounted the terrifying experience, stating that she was conversing with other mourners when she felt a sudden blow to her head, leading to intense pain and disorientation. She described being assisted by her partner, Rob, and later witnessing a woman, later identified as Oliver, screaming at her before being removed from the premises.

Following the attack, Belinda’s condition deteriorated, and she struggled to breathe, prompting her partner and friends to lay her down on the skittle alley for relief. She was eventually taken to the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff, where it was discovered that she had sustained multiple broken ribs and a punctured lung as a result of the assault.

Despite the severity of the incident, Oliver, who was 22 weeks pregnant at the time of the assault, received a suspended sentence of 66 weeks for two years at Cardiff Crown Court. Additionally, she was issued a restraining order for five years and a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement. The court emphasized the potential catastrophic consequences of violent actions, warning Oliver about the serious impact of her behavior.

Belinda expressed her disappointment at the lenient sentence, highlighting the ongoing physical and emotional repercussions she faces as a result of the attack. She criticized Oliver for not taking responsibility or showing remorse for her actions, emphasizing the lasting impact the incident has had on her daily life and well-being.

Despite the court’s decision, Belinda continues to cope with the aftermath of the assault, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice in cases of unprovoked violence, urging for stricter consequences for such behavior to prevent similar incidents in the future.
