The head of prisons in Newfoundland and Labrador has been relieved of duty following the uncovering of financial and administrative irregularities at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The Department of Justice and Public Safety initiated an internal review into the operational and financial systems at the correctional facility in St. John’s.
Confirming the irregularities, the department expressed a serious approach towards such incidents, leading to immediate action. Dan Chafe, who held the position of Superintendent of Prisons since 2020, overseeing multiple correctional facilities, has been replaced by Susan Green, the former provincial manager of institutional programs, in an acting capacity.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, the department has involved the Office of the Comptroller General in the review process and anticipates their findings. Furthermore, the Office of the Auditor General has been informed about potential fraud, although a decision on launching an investigation is pending.
Despite requests for comments, Chafe has not responded to inquiries. The department remains focused on addressing the irregularities and ensuring transparency in its operations.
