Russia launched a heavy aerial attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its surrounding areas, using numerous missiles and drones, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, as per officials on Thursday.

The assault by Moscow’s forces focused on Kyiv, with a particular emphasis on ballistic missile strikes. Ukraine’s deficiency in U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, which are essential for intercepting ballistic missiles, has been exploited by Russia in recent months.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested additional Patriot interceptors from other countries. However, global inventories are limited due to the ongoing Iran conflict and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The overnight attack by Russia also involved cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, which added pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses, according to the Ukrainian air force.

Explosions echoed throughout the city during the dark hours, with Kyiv being the primary target. However, impacts were observed at 28 sites across the nation. Zelenskyy reported approximately 40 injuries, while air raid alerts persisted until dawn.

Zelenskyy described the assault as massive, stating that Russia had meticulously planned it over an extended period, utilizing various missile types and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the attack targeted an industrial site in Kyiv producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles. The strike also hit facilities related to drone production and storage, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center.

In response to the Russian offensive on Kyiv, Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command activated military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance.

Furthermore, Spanish F-18 jets stationed in Romania were mobilized to monitor “air targets” near the border after 2 a.m. local time. Similarly, an unauthorized drone breached Moldova’s airspace, as reported by the Moldovan Defence Ministry.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia for challenging NATO and its partners, violating neighboring countries’ sovereignty, and escalating risks beyond Ukraine’s borders.

The desire for missile defense systems in Ukraine remains a challenge. The Associated Press analysis indicated a significant decline in U.S. Patriot inventory levels post-war, although the Pentagon retains a substantial stockpile. The production of interceptors faces hurdles in bridging the gap.

Political signals from Washington have been inconsistent. While U.S. President Donald Trump initially suggested providing Ukraine with a license to produce Patriots, the timeline for actual production remains uncertain.

Residential areas in Kyiv, including Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi districts, were struck by the overnight attacks, damaging buildings, medical facilities, and educational institutions. Emergency teams rescued individuals trapped under debris and attended to those in need.

In summary, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated with both sides utilizing drones and missiles extensively. The military struggle persists along the extensive front line, with drones playing a significant role in the ongoing warfare.
