A man identified by police as someone who avoids paying rent has been arrested for allegedly murdering his own brother in a violent stabbing incident during a rent collection dispute.
Thomas Campbell, 59, was taken into custody and charged with murder after his brother, Erik Campbell, 53, was fatally stabbed at Thomas’s residence in Gary, Indiana. The confrontation arose when Erik visited to collect rent on behalf of their mother, leading to a heated argument between the siblings.
The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, with Thomas reportedly wielding a knife and stabbing Erik multiple times. Surveillance footage cited in court records revealed the brothers fighting over the rent payment before the fatal stabbing occurred.
Erik was seen on camera confronting Thomas about a suspicious item in his hoodie pocket and challenging him fearlessly. In response, Thomas allegedly pulled out a knife and proceeded to stab Erik multiple times, causing severe injuries to his arm, neck, chest, and stomach.
Despite being rushed to Methodist Hospital Northlake, Erik succumbed to his wounds. Thomas, who called 911 for assistance, claimed he stabbed his brother in self-defense, alleging that Erik had threatened him with a firearm.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Thomas covered in blood on his porch, with Erik lying unresponsive nearby. Although no gun was recovered, witnesses recounted seeing Thomas stabbing Erik in the front yard and later spotting a bloodied knife in the vicinity.
Thomas told police that he believed Erik was reaching for a weapon, prompting him to draw the knife in a moment of perceived danger. He admitted to losing control and continuing to stab his brother, citing past instances of bullying as a trigger for the altercation.
According to detectives, tensions between the brothers had been escalating over the past 20 years, with their mother confirming Thomas’s aversion to paying rent. Thomas is currently detained at Lake County Jail without bond, facing a murder charge. His court appearance is scheduled for January 12, with a potential sentence of up to 65 years in prison if convicted.
