The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has once again claimed the top spot globally. After a 17-year gap, the band secured the Grade 1 world title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, marking their seventh championship victory. Led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan, the band’s exceptional performance was commended by Glasgow Life, the organization hosting the event for the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. Bevan expressed the significance of winning such a prestigious championship, emphasizing its esteemed status in the world of pipe bands.
This win is notable as it is the first time since 2010 that a non-U.K. band has clinched the world championship, according to Glasgow Life. Over 200 bands from 14 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and Malaysia, participated in the fiercely contested competition. Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, shared his joy at the long-awaited victory, highlighting the years of dedication and hard work that culminated in this success. Lee, a member of the band for 21 years, expressed immense happiness and pride in achieving this prestigious honor.
Preparations for the competition began in the fall, with Bevan emphasizing the band’s focus on expressive performances that set them apart. Their dynamic drum section, generating high energy, often earns them enthusiastic applause. Bevan noted that this year, the band felt exceptionally well-prepared and delivered their best performances. Judged on their four performances during the two-day event, the band’s diverse members, including teachers, lawyers, students, and even a bagpipe maker like Lee, reflect a strong and vibrant piping community in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.
