Survivors of a harrowing plane emergency landing in Prince George, B.C., which resulted in one fatality and several injuries, are recounting their experiences. Jaime Pawliuk described the moment when the plane came hurtling towards him as he was driving to work. Despite sustaining superficial cuts and being showered with glass, he managed to escape with minor injuries.
The emergency landing of the Beech King Air 200 aircraft occurred around 2:30 p.m. PT on Foothills Boulevard, a major road in Prince George. Pawliuk and others had to abandon their vehicles at the scene during the ongoing investigation. Subsequently, damaged vehicles were removed from the site by flatbed trucks on Friday afternoon.
Witness Mohit Arora reported seeing a pickup truck being struck by the plane’s wing, although the driver survived. Images revealed wreckage, including a propeller on the road and a vehicle with its roof partially torn off. A family member of occupants in another vehicle confirmed they were unharmed but had their car damaged and were forced off the road by the plane.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) confirmed that the plane collided with four vehicles and detailed the plane’s departure from Sturdee Airstrip with a total of eight individuals onboard. The aircraft was en route to Prince George International Airport but experienced engine failure, leading to the emergency landing.
Former TSB investigator Bill Yearwood explained the challenges faced by pilots during emergencies and highlighted the critical decisions they must make. He expressed surprise at the plane’s inability to maintain flight with one engine operational, indicating there may have been extenuating circumstances.
The road reopened after the incident, with the plane undergoing assessment at a temporary storage facility. Residents observed the plane being towed away for further examination. Pawliuk, still in shock from the ordeal, expressed gratitude for surviving and extended condolences to the deceased victim’s family.
