Team GB has finally achieved success at the Winter Olympics with Matt Weston claiming a gold medal in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, was a prominent contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and demonstrated a strong performance by leading after the initial two heats.
His times of 56.21 and 55.88 in the first two heats added up to an overall time of 1:52.09 before the second day. He continued his impressive streak with a noteworthy time of 55.63 in the third heat. Weston’s final run set a new track record with a time of 55.61, leading him to an emotional victory celebrated alongside his teammate Marcus Wyatt and Team GB coaches.
This victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Weston, who had finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. On the other hand, Wyatt improved significantly on the second day in Italy but secured only a seventh-place finish with a total time of 3:45.77.
Expressing his emotions after the win, Weston stated, “It means everything. It means a hell of a lot to me personally, I have worked so hard for this. Everyone back at home, my fiancée, my family, my friends, everyone that has sacrificed for me to be here. I have missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment and it feels amazing.”
In addition to Weston’s success, Team GB officially entered the medal standings at the Winter Olympics. German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Commenting on Weston’s performance, Lizzie Yarnold praised his speed and decision-making under intense pressure, highlighting the physical and emotional demands of the sport. Team GB’s chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, expressed immense joy for Weston’s achievement, emphasizing his composure and exceptional performance.
