Timpson, a popular shoe repair chain, has introduced a new service allowing customers to trade in their mobile phones. Teaming up with gadget resell company musicMagpie and its parent company AO, Timpson now offers a quick cash exchange for old handsets at its stores.

Recent data reveals that a significant 73% of adults in the UK possess at least one unused smartphone at home, with an average trade-in worth of approximately £250. The collective value of these unused devices is estimated to be around £10 billion by research conducted by Censuswide.

While numerous online options for reselling exist, Timpson aims to cater to individuals who prefer a face-to-face transaction. The survey indicates that 68% of people prefer in-person device trades, with one in four emphasizing the importance of immediate payment.

The partnership between Timpson and musicMagpie initiated a trial of the trade-in service four months ago and has now expanded it to over 1,300 Timpson stores nationwide. John Roberts, the CEO and founder of AO World, emphasized the convenience of the service, stating that customers can now swiftly receive cash for their old smartphones at any of the 1,300 Timpson locations.

Steve Oliver, the managing director and co-founder of musicMagpie, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, mentioning that the addition of Magpie to Timpson’s extensive network marks a significant achievement in enhancing customer reach and service convenience.

Sid Hubbard, the group director of Timpson, highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to repairing and refurbishing goods, extending now to smartphone trade-ins for the benefit of their customers in collaboration with musicMagpie. This service expansion aims to further enhance the high street experience for both new and existing Timpson clientele.
