The latest league table has revealed the top-performing grammar and comprehensive schools in the UK. The rankings, featured in the esteemed Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026, were determined by the exam results from summer 2025. Notably, Grammar Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet claimed the top spot among state schools, while Dame Alice Owen’s School in Potters Bar secured the top position for comprehensives in the South East and across the UK.
Comprehensive schools accommodate students of all academic levels, whereas grammar schools are more selective in their admissions. Both types are government-funded and adhere to the national curriculum, with no school fees charged to parents. West London Free School was recognized as the second-best comprehensive school, with London schools dominating half of the top 20 spots for comprehensives and 12 of the highest-ranking state primary schools.
In a significant shift, Thomas Jones Primary School in London surged to become the top primary school, while Wilson’s School in south London was lauded as the best state school for GCSEs. St Paul’s School in London emerged as the leading private school in the country.
Editor Helen Davies of The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide commended teachers for their dedication in navigating the challenges of the education sector and providing innovative learning experiences for students.
