Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community located in the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba, as confirmed by the RCMP. Authorities were notified about the incident when the children were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to the police statement released on Thursday, family members discovered the toddlers in the nearby lake and promptly brought them to the nursing station with the assistance of First Nation safety officers. Despite efforts, the boys were pronounced dead at the nursing station. Law enforcement officials believe that the boys wandered away from their residence and entered the lake on their own accord, ruling out any suspicion of foul play.
Grand Chief Alex McDougall of Anisininew Okimawin, representing the four First Nations in the Island Lake region including Garden Hill, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the two young lives. The community has come together to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
McDougall mentioned that preventive measures, such as building a fence to restrict access to the water, had been implemented by the family. The community is in a state of shock and devastation, with efforts underway to provide necessary resources and assistance to the immediate family. Garden Hill is situated approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
Tragically, this incident adds to the five drowning deaths reported in Manitoba in 2026, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito highlighted a previous drowning during the spring ice breakup on Island Lake and emphasized the importance of supporting families in such distressing times.
