A tragic incident occurred at an unlicensed bar in the Saulsville township near Pretoria, South Africa, resulting in 11 fatalities, including three children, and injuring 14 others. The shooting, carried out by three unidentified gunmen, took place early on Saturday morning. Among the deceased were a three-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl. Authorities are currently searching for the suspects responsible for this senseless act.

Police reported that the assailants entered the unauthorized establishment and opened fire on the patrons. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made yet. The police confirmed that a total of 25 individuals were shot during the incident.

The police spokesperson described the location as an “illegal shebeen” and expressed concerns about the prevalence of violence in such unlicensed liquor premises. South Africa, known for its high homicide rates, recorded over 26,000 homicides in 2024, primarily attributed to firearms. Despite strict gun ownership laws, many homicides are committed using illegal firearms.

Notably, South Africa has witnessed multiple mass shootings at bars, commonly referred to as shebeens or taverns, with previous incidents resulting in significant casualties. The country continues to grapple with the challenge of gun violence, with recent tragic events underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to address this ongoing issue.
