Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, urging him to improve and be more accepting for progress to be achieved in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump, in an interview with Politico, highlighted Russia’s dominant position in peace negotiations and expressed disappointment in Ukraine’s European supporters for not providing sufficient aid to Kyiv. Despite Trump’s efforts to propose a 28-point peace plan, disagreements over crucial issues like territorial concessions to Russia and future security assurances have hindered progress.

Trump emphasized Russia’s stronger negotiating position due to its size and power, raising concerns in Kyiv about potential pressure on Ukraine to make concessions. Zelensky, however, expressed reservations about certain aspects of the proposed plan and planned to submit a revised version to the White House. Trump’s criticism extended to European leaders for their perceived inaction on the Ukrainian conflict, noting their excessive talk without tangible results.

Regarding his son’s comments about the possibility of walking away from negotiations, Trump denied the claim but hinted at the need for cooperation with Russia given its advantages. The interview coincided with Zelensky’s meeting with Pope Leo in Italy, where they discussed the importance of dialogue, peace initiatives, and the repatriation of Ukrainian individuals held in Russia. Zelensky appreciated the pontiff’s support and invited him to visit Ukraine.

Zelensky is engaging in diplomatic discussions in Rome, including a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, to bolster European backing amid uncertainties about US involvement. Trump’s outspoken remarks on the peace talks have raised questions about American policy and the direction of the negotiations, especially as Ukraine faces escalating military pressure from Russia. Despite the rhetoric, both sides remain steadfast in their core demands, underscoring the complex challenges in reaching a resolution to the conflict.
