Former US President Donald Trump has taken legal action against the BBC regarding the editing of a speech he gave to supporters prior to the 2021 Capitol riots. Trump is seeking $5 billion in damages from the media outlet for their airing of the speech on Panorama.

Trump hinted at the lawsuit earlier on Monday before officially announcing it, accusing the BBC of misrepresenting his words. The lawsuit pertains to a segment on the Panorama news show aired a week before the 2024 US election.

Speaking from the Oval Office on December 15, Trump stated, “I’m suing the BBC for fabricating statements attributed to me. They literally fabricated my words.”

The episode in question spliced together excerpts from Trump’s speech, suggesting he encouraged the crowd to march to the Capitol and engage in a confrontation. However, these phrases were pieced together from different parts of his speech delivered almost an hour apart.

The BBC has issued an apology for the editing error, acknowledging a lapse in judgment but asserting that there is no legal basis for Trump’s claims.

A representative from Trump’s legal team criticized the editing as a deliberate attempt to influence the presidential election. They asserted, “The BBC has a history of misleading its audience in its coverage of President Trump, driven by its leftist political bias. President Trump’s robust legal action aims to hold the BBC accountable for defamation and unwarranted election interference, much like he has done with other mainstream media outlets spreading misinformation.”

The lawsuit has been filed in the southern district of Florida, with Trump seeking $5 billion in damages for defamation and violation of a Florida trade practices law. Despite the news company rejecting his initial compensation demands in November, Trump’s legal team maintains that the BBC intentionally defamed him through manipulative editing.

The lawsuit, filed in Trump’s personal capacity, names the BBC and BBC Studios Productions as defendants. He is represented by attorneys Alejandro Brito, Edward Paltzik, and Daniel Epstein.

The fallout from the incident led to the resignation of Tim Davie, the BBC’s director-general, and Deborah Turness, the head of BBC News. Davie acknowledged errors and accepted responsibility upon his resignation.

Trump denies any responsibility for the incident, which aimed to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory over him in the 2020 US presidential election.
