The fee for a TV licence is increasing once again, but if you no longer require one, you might be eligible for a refund. Currently priced at £174.50 annually, the TV licence fee will rise to £180 beginning in April. It is mandatory to have a TV licence if you watch or record live TV, or view any content, whether live or catch-up, on BBC iPlayer.
If you exclusively watch catch-up shows on streaming platforms other than BBC iPlayer, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, then a TV licence is not necessary. However, if you watch live shows via these services, a TV licence is required. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £1,000.
Should you no longer require your TV licence before its expiration date, you may be entitled to a refund if there is at least one month remaining on it. Additionally, if you qualify for an over 75 or blind concession, you can also request a refund. Remember that watching TV programmes that necessitate a TV licence without one could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
