U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that the Trump administration is focused on safeguarding domestic supply chains rather than engaging in a trade war with Canada. Greer stated that any country retaliating against the U.S. would face consequences as the administration takes steps to protect its interests globally.

Following President Trump’s tariff threat of imposing a 50% duty on numerous Canadian products from August 19 onwards, trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canada’s Minister of Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, as productive, noting that while the Canadian side aims for a conciliatory approach, the U.S. remains firm on enforcing its trade policies.

Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations have indicated that Canada views the looming August 19 deadline as pivotal. Greer reiterated the U.S.’ commitment to prioritizing American interests and hinted at presenting options to President Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney before the deadline.

Both sides have exchanged proposals to address the tariffs in place, with the U.S. offering a new plan that falls short of Canadian expectations. Despite efforts to resolve trade issues, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about reaching a swift agreement, cautioning against compromising on key issues like dairy negotiations.

Greer highlighted concerns over Canada’s retaliatory measures, particularly regarding alcohol bans and tariffs, likening them to actions taken by China. In response, former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, defended Canada’s stance, asserting the country’s right to retaliate against unfair practices imposed by the U.S. authorities.
