A family from the UK is eagerly anticipating a Christmas miracle as their grandfather is on the brink of being released from a high-security prison in Dubai. Albert Douglas, who has been imprisoned for six years due to debts that were not his own, has endured harrowing experiences such as witnessing the rape and suicides of fellow inmates, as well as facing torture and deprivation of basic necessities. However, his family is now optimistic that the 63-year-old will be repatriated in the near future.

After a four-year investigation, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) determined that Mr. Douglas’s detention was unjustifiable and lacked legal basis under international law. His son, Wolfgang, expressed immense relief, likening the situation to winning the lottery, as it seemed impossible to secure his father’s release previously.

Mr. Douglas, a resident of London, was arrested in 2019 and subsequently sentenced to three years in prison in February 2021, despite evidence proving his innocence regarding his son’s company’s financial matters. His sentence was later extended by five years in October 2023, leading to significant legal expenses amounting to £4 million incurred by Wolfgang in his relentless efforts to secure his father’s freedom.

Following the UN’s ruling, Wolfgang has newfound hope for his father’s future, expressing disbelief at the progress made. Mr. Douglas, once living a lavish lifestyle in Dubai with his family, faced a drastic turn of events when he was implicated in financial troubles related to his son’s business, leading to his imprisonment.

Wolfgang, who vehemently denies any wrongdoing, has dedicated himself to clearing his father’s name, even at the cost of his mental well-being. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed their support for the British national in the UAE and remains in close communication with his family.
