Advocating for tax fairness is imperative.

A recent report from Oxfam reveals an unsettling reality: slightly more than 50 wealthy individuals in the UK possess wealth exceeding that of nearly half of the nation’s population combined.

Millions of Britons struggle with energy, food, or housing insecurities, or a combination of these challenges. Beyond being a hindrance to their quality of life and their children’s opportunities, this situation significantly hampers the overall economy. Poverty contributes to escalating social security, law enforcement, and healthcare expenses, ultimately impeding economic progress by limiting the potential of individuals.

The existing wealth disparity is not a necessity; the issue lies in the unequal distribution of resources within the country. Despite marginal differences in performance between the extremely affluent and the ultra-poor, the staggering wealth chasm persists.

The root problem lies in the tax system. Working individuals, who earn through labor, face significantly higher tax rates compared to those who generate income through investments. The current system differentiates between income tax for laborers, often the least affluent, and Capital Gains tax for investors.

A step towards rectifying this imbalance would be to uniformly tax all forms of income. Aligning income tax rates with capital gains tax rates could generate approximately £12 billion annually.

Furthermore, implementing a wealth tax could be beneficial. A nominal 2% tax on wealth exceeding £10 million would impact only 20,000 individuals but could yield £26 billion annually. These substantial funds could address various fiscal gaps and support crucial sectors like the NHS.

The current tax framework disproportionately burdens the less affluent while sparing the excessively wealthy. Crafted by and for the financially privileged, these tax regulations require reform. It is in the interest of both the rich and the poor to advocate for change. The tax system plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation, and a collective effort towards equity is essential for a better future.
