Virgin Media is set to upgrade some broadband customers to advanced technology at no extra cost. The company will replace older Hub 3 and Hub 4 routers with the newer Hub 5, which features enhanced Wi-Fi 6 technology for faster and more reliable connections.
Eligible customers will receive email notifications over the next few weeks and months as the upgrade is gradually implemented throughout 2026. The Hub 5, equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas, promises stronger and more consistent coverage for homes. Virgin Media plans to upgrade thousands of customers currently using outdated routers.
Customers need not take any action until contacted by Virgin Media directly. They can also verify their eligibility by logging into their My Virgin Media account online. To determine which router they have, users can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device or view it through the Virgin Media Connect app.
Upgrading to the Hub 5 router can significantly enhance broadband performance, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The Hub 5 is optimized for faster Gig1 speeds, allowing for quicker downloads and streaming. With Gig1 speeds, downloading a full HD movie takes less than 40 seconds, more than 10 times faster than the UK average.
Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless networking technology, delivers faster speeds, increased efficiency, and better performance in congested environments. It can accommodate more connected devices simultaneously and provides superior performance across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6 is also energy-efficient, making it ideal for modern smart homes with numerous connected devices and high data requirements. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 remains suitable for the average user.
