U.S. Vice-President JD Vance shared his perspective on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. Vance mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to display toughness compared to U.S. President Donald Trump. He acknowledged Conservative MP Jamil Jivani as a valuable supporter for Canada.
At the private event in Southampton, N.Y., Vance described Carney as a “very amiable individual” with whom he has a good rapport. However, Vance pointed out that Carney’s approach of trying to outdo Trump was amusing since Canada made concessions on several issues despite Carney’s assertive stance. He credited Jivani, a Canadian MP, for effectively advocating on Canada’s behalf behind the scenes.
Vance also remarked on Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Canadian Conservatives, stating that Poilievre played a minimal role in the negotiations. The White House and Vance’s office did not respond to requests for comments.
The recent agreement involved a three-day postponement of new tariffs on Canadian goods, following discussions between Trump and Carney. Trump emphasized that the deal was beneficial for both parties and highlighted the positive relationship with Canadian leadership.
Reports indicate that the deal will entail reduced tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles in exchange for the reinstatement of American alcohol in Canadian stores. Further details of the agreement remain undisclosed, with Trump mentioning the elimination of tariffs on American farmers. Dominic LeBlanc, the Canada-U.S. Minister, is engaged in talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to finalize the deal before the deadline.
Vance emphasized that Trump aimed to influence Canadian behavior through the negotiations, seeking favorable outcomes for the U.S. He highlighted the evolving relationship between the two countries under Trump’s administration and the key role played by Jivani in the negotiations.
Jivani, a close friend of Vance since their time at Yale, has actively participated in discussions with Canadian and U.S. officials. Despite some internal disagreements within the Canadian Conservative Party over trade negotiations, Jivani continues to engage with the Trump administration to ensure Canada’s interests are represented effectively.
