Serena and Venus Williams have teamed up once again for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament. The sisters secured a wild card entry on Wednesday for the doubles event, a competition they have previously triumphed in twice.

After a four-year hiatus, Serena Williams made her return to tennis this summer. The siblings had initially planned to compete together at Wimbledon; however, Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury following her singles defeat. Their most recent outing was at the Cincinnati Open, where they were eliminated in the opening round.

The Williams sisters have a strong history at the U.S. Open, clinching the doubles titles in 1999 and 2009 and boasting a 27-7 record in their nine appearances. Their last participation was in 2022, ending in a first-round loss, which was anticipated to be Serena’s final match at Flushing Meadows.

During the mixed doubles event, Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz, securing a victory before exiting in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, is set to compete in the women’s singles competition.

With a remarkable tally of 14 Grand Slam doubles championships and Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012, the Williams sisters have also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.

Although Serena chose not to participate in the singles category at the U.S. Open, where she has claimed six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she felt fit enough to accept wild card entries for both doubles events.

Their first U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s inaugural singles triumph at the tournament. Their peak success as a duo occurred around a decade later, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by a second U.S. Open title in the same year. Subsequent victories in Australia in 2010 and the French Open solidified their dominance, holding all four major titles concurrently.

The women’s doubles tournament is scheduled to kick off on September 3, marking the beginning of another chapter for the iconic Williams sisters on the court.
