A tragic nighttime collision claimed the lives of a young Italian couple shortly after the woman marked her 20th birthday. Chiara Garofalo, 20, and Antonio Graziadio, 20, lost their lives in a fatal accident that occurred on Sunday in the town of Cassano allo Ionio in southern Italy. The incident involved a head-on collision between a Fiat Panda carrying Chiara, Antonio, and two other passengers aged 16 and 18, and an Alfa Romeo Mito on the Jonica state road at approximately 3:30 am.
Despite efforts by emergency medical teams to revive Chiara and Antonio, their deaths were confirmed at the scene. Chiara assisted her parents in their family bakery, while Antonio was employed as an electrician, as reported by Italian media sources.
The local mayor, Gianpaolo Iacobini, expressed the community’s sorrow over the untimely loss of the young couple, stating, “It is difficult to put into words and even harder to comprehend. Once again, Cassano grieves for its youngsters whose lives were cut short too soon. Let us pray for Chiara and Antonio and offer support to their families. Our thoughts are also with the other two young individuals who sustained serious injuries.”
Authorities in Castrovillari have initiated an investigation into the incident and are considering whether to proceed with an autopsy.
