Russia is exaggerating its military successes in Ukraine and concealing battlefield casualties by falsely labeling fallen soldiers as deserters in a bid to gain an advantage in peace negotiations. This tactic coincides with the deployment of around 156,000 Russian troops in the conflict zone, as efforts are made to shield the true extent of the war from the Russian populace.

Claims of a triumph in Pokrovsk propagated by the Kremlin were refuted by the Chief of Kyiv’s armed forces, who highlighted instances of Russian soldiers being executed by their own side. The alleged capture of the strategic city of Pokrovsk was denied by Kyiv’s military commander Olekdandr Syrsky, emphasizing the ongoing defense efforts lasting over 16 months.

Reports suggest that Russian units are manipulating casualty figures by falsely categorizing deceased soldiers as absent without leave (AWOL), with inside sources revealing that hundreds of killed troops are being recorded as deserters. Many of these fatalities are attributed to Russian “barrier units” targeting soldiers to compel them into combat.

Furthermore, there are indications that Russia is distorting the realities of the conflict to apply pressure on Kyiv, influence the United States, and coerce compliance with Kremlin demands. Observers at the Institute for the Study of War noted a significant escalation in Russia’s psychological warfare campaign, aimed at portraying military and economic prowess to ensure victory in a war of attrition against Ukraine.

Despite assertions from high-ranking Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, about battlefield advancements and economic strength, the actual situation on the frontlines, particularly in Pokrovsk and Hulyaipole sectors, does not align with these claims. Concerns have emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump may be losing patience with peace negotiations and pressuring Kyiv to concede to Russian terms, criticizing European allies for inadequate support.

Trump’s increasing demands for a peace agreement and calls for territorial concessions to Moscow have intensified diplomatic tensions. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, its forces have faced numerous accusations of war crimes, with casualties exceeding one million among Russian troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated active collaboration between Ukraine and Europe on strategies to end the conflict, with plans expected to be presented to the U.S. shortly.

The conflict traces back to Russia’s covert entry into Ukraine in 2014 through the annexation of Crimea following political upheaval in Kyiv.
