Authorities in southern Spain have discovered a body believed to be that of a missing British woman after an extensive search effort.

The search was initiated for 73-year-old Geraldine Ann, who disappeared from her residence in Chirivel, near Granada, on September 17.

Allegedly, she left her home late at night wearing pyjamas and flip-flops to feed some cats following an argument with her husband. Her husband reported her missing the next day. The body was discovered concealed under vegetation near a motorway. Authorities are awaiting definitive DNA test results, but indications suggest the deceased individual is Geraldine.

The Chirivel Town Hall released a statement expressing deep regret over the discovery of a body near the A-92 motorway believed to belong to their neighbor Geraldine, pending official confirmation.

A widespread search effort was launched for the missing British woman, who resided in a hamlet named Contador in the Chirivel district, involving drones, officials, and volunteers.

The Mayor of Chirivel, Jose Torregrosa Mota, mentioned that Geraldine suffered from senile dementia and had left home after a minor disagreement with her husband.

He also expressed gratitude to the Civil Guard and local police from Chirivel and Cullar for their efforts in finding Geraldine’s body, located just over a mile from her residence. Search operations involved sniffer dogs and a specialized mountain rescue unit called the GREIM.

Volunteers, including British expats, joined the search for the missing elderly person after her disappearance was publicized on social media and through the Spanish missing persons association SOS Desaparecidos.

Despite the advanced control room no longer being operational, efforts to locate Geraldine continue. An appeal from the local municipality urged everyone, especially farmers and sports enthusiasts, to remain vigilant.

This news follows the discovery of the body of a British man, Marc Tulloch Hewson, who had gone missing for nearly a month in Spain’s Costa Blanca. Hewson, 63, originally from Wantage, Oxfordshire, was last seen near Torrevieja south of Alicante around September 20.

He had left his residence in Orihuela Costa two days before his disappearance, was taken to Torrevieja Hospital by ambulance, and was discharged around 2am on September 19, after which he disappeared.

A body recovered from the water at the fishing port of Aguilas in Murcia on October 15 is believed to be his.
