Heartbroken family members of a grandfather who was left to die in his hospital bed have shared their sorrow over the loss. Phillip Unwin passed away at Royal Stoke University Hospital on April 3, 2024.

The 68-year-old Fulford resident was admitted to the hospital after experiencing fever, breathing issues, and chest pain. Unfortunately, medical staff did not promptly identify the underlying cause, leading to his death within a day.

An investigation revealed that Phillip’s death was due to natural causes. However, the North Staffordshire area coroner, Daniel Howe, pointed out missed opportunities to escalate care promptly, warning that similar incidents could lead to more deaths.

Daughter Lynsey Gould expressed the family’s devastation, stating that they have been shattered by the tragedy. She recounted how her father, despite his age, was generally healthy and active, playing sports with his grandson. Despite efforts to seek medical help, the situation deteriorated rapidly.

Jennifer Unwin, Phillip’s wife of fifty years, felt helpless as she witnessed his decline and pleaded for assistance from medical staff, only to feel ignored. She described the lack of attention and delayed diagnosis that ultimately led to her husband’s deterioration.

Phillip’s death was later attributed to multi-organ failure caused by pneumonia. His relatives believe that timely intervention could have prevented the tragedy, echoing the coroner’s concerns. Jennifer expressed a loss of faith in the healthcare system, highlighting the need for improved care standards.

The University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust acknowledged the coroner’s recommendations and has since implemented changes. These include introducing a ‘named-nurse’ system and a process for concerned family members to request urgent medical assessments.

Dr. Diane Adamson, Royal Stoke’s chief medical officer, extended condolences to the family and acknowledged shortcomings in care. The hospital has taken steps to enhance patient safety, including the introduction of new protocols and staffing adjustments to ensure quality care.

The family continues to grapple with the profound impact of their loss, with Lynsey emphasizing the void left by her father’s absence. Despite the challenges they face, they hope that lessons learned from this tragic event will lead to necessary improvements in healthcare practices to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
