Millions of consumers continue to rely on the major mobile networks, namely EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, for their connectivity needs. However, a recent study by consumer organization Which? indicates that these larger providers are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their lesser-known competitors.
After polling over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, the research team discovered that smaller network operators often offer better value for money and superior customer service. The survey aimed to pinpoint which companies are meeting customer demands effectively and which ones are not. The results revealed that the established “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind numerous smaller rivals in the industry.
In the rankings, Talkmobile emerged as the leader, closely followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, securing the ninth spot, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
One of the key takeaways from the report was the pricing discrepancy. The study found that customers on the Big Four networks typically paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only plan, in contrast to just £9 for users on smaller networks.
Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, the report highlighted that coverage quality is not compromised. Many of these smaller operators utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring that customers can access the same level of signal strength and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.
Moreover, the study emphasized that switching between providers is relatively simple, with some customers able to transition to a new network in as little as 10 minutes. For instance, a member of Which? shared their experience of leaving O2 due to a significant bill increase and seamlessly switching to a more affordable plan with SMARTY, saving around £200 annually.
Natalie Hitchins, the Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, remarked on the findings, highlighting that smaller providers consistently outperform the industry giants by offering better customer support and more cost-effective deals. She encouraged customers approaching the end of their contracts and seeking better value to consider switching to providers that prioritize customer satisfaction and affordability.
The full scores from Which? ranked various mobile operators based on customer satisfaction and service quality, with Talkmobile leading the list at 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and others like Voxi, 1p Mobile, and Lebara also receiving commendable ratings.
